Ping colour codes: what the dot on your iron means

In short: The coloured dot on a Ping iron is its colour code: it shows the lie angle the club was built to. Black is standard, and Ping’s chart runs through 10 colour codes from 5 degrees upright to 4 degrees flat. To replace one Ping iron, match the dot as well as the model, shaft and flex.

What the colour dot shows

Ping marks the lie angle of each iron with a coloured dot on the head. The lie angle is how upright or flat the club sits when you address the ball. Ping’s founder, Karsten Solheim, developed the Ping Color Code Chart, and Ping still uses it to fit irons. There are 10 colour codes, from 5 degrees upright to 4 degrees flat. Ping lists the lie angles of its irons for the Black colour code at standard length, so Black is the standard lie.

The 10 Ping colour codes

From the most upright to the flattest, as shown on Ping’s Color Code Chart. Each step is one degree of lie angle against Black, the standard.

How Ping works out your colour code

Ping’s chart gives a first recommendation for club length and lie angle from two measurements: your height and the distance from your wrist to the floor. A fitter then confirms it by watching how the club strikes the ground. The full chart is on Ping’s website.

Replacing one Ping iron

If you have lost or broken one iron from a Ping set, look for the same model with the same colour dot, then match the shaft (steel or graphite) and its flex. Most of our Ping listings give the dot colour in the title. Browse used Ping golf clubs, or go by club number in single irons.

Questions about Ping colour codes

What does the colour dot on a Ping iron mean?

It is Ping's colour code for the lie angle the iron was built to: how upright or flat the club sits at address. Ping's chart has 10 colour codes, from 5 degrees upright to 4 degrees flat.

Which Ping colour code is standard?

Black. Ping gives the lie angles on its iron pages for the Black colour code at standard length; the other colours are more upright or flatter than that.

How does Ping work out my colour code?

Ping's Color Code Chart gives a first recommendation for length and lie from your height and your wrist-to-floor measurement. A fitter then checks it with shots.

I am replacing one Ping iron. Does the dot matter?

Yes. A replacement with the same colour dot as the rest of your set will sit and launch like your other irons. Most of our Ping listings give the colour of the dot in the title.
