Which shaft flex do I need?

In short: Shaft flex should suit your swing speed. Powerful golfers use stiff, average golfers use regular, and golfers struggling for distance use senior. Good lady golfers often use men’s clubs. The flex is usually printed on the shaft or its label, just below the grip.

Which flex suits you

  • Stiff (S): powerful golfers with a fast swing. Extra stiff (X) is for the very fastest swings.
  • Regular (R): the average golfer.
  • Senior (A or M, sometimes called lite): golfers who are struggling for distance or have a slower swing.
  • Ladies (L): the softest flex, for a slower swing. Good lady golfers often use men’s clubs with a regular or senior shaft.

Where to find the flex on your clubs

Look at the shaft just below the grip, or at the label or band on it. Graphite shafts usually have the flex printed on them as a letter or a word: R, S, A or L, or Regular, Stiff, Senior or Ladies. On steel shafts it is often part of the shaft’s name: a True Temper Dynamic Gold R300 is regular and an S300 is stiff. Most of our listings give the flex in the title, for example REGULAR STEEL SHAFT or LADIES GRAPHITE SHAFT.
